Edwards with Tony Danza

Miami native Gail Edwards, one of the most arresting-looking actresses on television, carries an appropriately creepy mix of wide-eyed innocence and “Fatal Attraction.” If there's anything wrong with this very funny episode, it's that we can’t quite accept*(a) that palooka Tony thinks he’s too good for this sweet, gorgeous, ambitious girl and (b) that she doesn't think she's too good for him. Amazingly, the episode triumphs over a sitcom premise. A lot of it has to do with the caliber of the individual performances.

Edwards with Judd Hirsch

This was one of my first guest-star appearances, if not the first. It was a thrill to get this part because it was depicting a real tough, New York, pill-popping chick—a role I didn’t think I could play. All week with the cast, I worked hard at “gettin' dangerous.” Five days into rehearsals, when we were getting ready to tape in front of our first live audience, the director [James Burrows] came up to me and said, “You're so tough, Gail, we're afraid you're gonna knife Tony. Could you take your performance back two days?”  I took it as a challenge and a compliment. Looking back, I take it as one of the funniest notes a director has ever given me.

Question
:
How was Tony Danza to play against? I've heard him say that in his early days on Taxi he was 'full of himself'. So, was he a generous actor or a jerk? Being this was your first guest starring TV role that could have made a big difference in your performance... Yes?  No?  Thanks.

No doubt, you're an actor asking this question...

Tony was not very available. I asked him if we could have lunch together and he flat-out refused. He gave nothing besides what happened on stage whereas Judd Hirsch, Danny DeVito and others were very available. Be that as it may, it never affected my performance at all.

Years later, I auditioned for a Danza project where they were casting his ex-wife. The audition room was packed full of producers, writers, etc. When I faced Tony to read, I was aware that my back was to half the room. Before reading, I looked toward everyone and asked, “Should I stand in a better place so you all can see me?” Tony, in a pointed, deliberate tone replied, “I'm the only one here that needs to see.”  So, yeah - looking back, I suppose he might have been a bit snooty.

Then again, as things go, sometimes you can't be everything to everybody. I'm sure I've been labeled as an actor with a ‘tude’ at times and didn't mean to be.
